My mom used to say she had to wait until the water was turned off until she could come visit. That always made me crazy. Like she was valuing her plants more than me. Or my children. What I didn’t see is my mom as a person. As Renae. I’m seeing her more that way now. There is no way to say something is MORE important. I have A LOT of importants. And your importants are going to be different than mine. Sleeping in my own bed, riding my bike and being in my house are important. So is seeing my grandchildren. Being with extended family. Spending time with people I love. You know there is a BUT coming. I can’t be ALL of the different me’s without being, just me. My mom’s garden was a lifelong part of her. She loved the Sunday school she taught. The service she gave. That was her, as much as being a grandmother and a mother. And guess what, she was all of it. All of her importants made her, her! Living and loving all of the important parts of my life, and not belittling what “shouldn’t” be important is my #sweetfringebenefit today. Wearing my linen tee. It has two importants on it. Nantucket is an important place in my memories. I do still love going, but I have memories of our annual family gatherings. And a bike. Well, you know, me and my bike are besties.
